Introduction
SPIDER (System for Processing Image Data from Electron microscopy and Related fields) is an image processing system for electron microscopy, especially useful for single-particle reconstruction. SPIDER has been in use since 1978 and contains over 210,000 lines of Fortran code and 7,400 files. The latest release from July 2020 (which will probably be the final release) contains support for reading/writing MRC files. It is mainly used in averaging of single particle objects, multivariate statistical analysis, 3D reconstruction, electron tomography, and object segmentation from volumes.
This release consists of the spider and web modules, and contains all related source code (mostly released under the GPLv2 license) and some precompiled executable files.
The SPIDER module is used for computing that does not require graphical interaction or visualization. The Web module is used for operations involving graphical interaction with data, for example, displaying an image file. It has a click-through interface using the Motif/X-Window system or Java (JWeb).
