Marine meteorology relies on HPC for time-sensitive, large-scale tasks. The evolving Earth System Model (ESM) demands far greater performance to achieve higher resolution and address more complex physical process, ensemble forecasting, and multi-sphere coupling. The marine meteorology field involves weather forecasting, climate predictions, ocean simulation, and air quality monitoring. Kunpeng HPC Solution greatly improves the capability of predicting extreme weather conditions such as typhoons, rainstorms, and lightning, efficiently reducing loss of life and property.
Industry Overview

Application Scenarios

Weather
Weather forecasting is the application of science and technology to predict the state of the atmosphere for a given location and time, typically spanning 1 hour to 30 days. This work, using data collected by weather stations and satellites, helps minimize impact of extreme weather on people's production and life. Common open source weather forecasting software includes WRF and GFS, which have been ported to the Kunpeng platform. With the development of the meteorology industry in China, a batch of excellent China-made software emerges, such as GRAPES and BCC. The software has been ported to the Kunpeng platform and has advantages in performance while ensuring computing accuracy.

Climate/Marine
Climate research, from glacier modeling, sea level rise, and the carbon cycle to the El Niño phenomenon, requires immense HPC resources. HPC helps achieve higher accuracy for more complex simulation modeling and effectively reduces the simulation time. The commonly used climate prediction software, including the Community Earth System Model (CESM) proposed by the US National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), NEMO, and ROMS, have been ported to the Kunpeng platform.
